Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainability-Focused “Green Frog” Seal

Alicia Procello Maddox is a Southern California executive who engages with the Avery Dennison Foundation as president. The organization Alicia Procello Maddox leads works in partnership with the Rainforest Alliance in promoting sustainability efforts within northeast Honduras’ rugged La Mosquitia area.

One vital aspect of the Rainforest Alliance is its network of tour operators and hotels that emphasize visits to locales that are on the forefront of sustainability efforts. The “green frog” seal at the heart of inclusion on Rainforest Alliance’s recommended resort list includes businesses that meet a range of social and environmental standards.

One such green vacation destination is on the Riviera Maya on Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula. The Banyan Tree Mayakoba is a resort that was established with sustainability as a core consideration. Rich coastal ecosystems that include mangroves and reefs are preserved and local organizations undertake activities such as education for impoverished youth and reforestation projects. In addition, the resort leads sea turtle and melipona bee protection efforts that help preserve biodiversity.
